The setting is a sleek, modern duplex that transforms into a barren, blood-red landscape under the direction of Rupert Goold, complete with a chorus of "baby-clutching mums" who gossip and patronize the protagonist. The famous confrontations between Medea and Jason are not rendered in classical verse but in the raw, recognizable language of a marriage falling apart, with the couple conducting their mutual hostilities via mobile phones.

However, this autobiographical intensity is what gives the play its cutting edge in gender politics. A 2021 academic paper in Comparative Drama notes that Cusk’s Medea functions to “critique the coercive norms of patriarchal motherhood”. By removing the physical murder of children and replacing it with the emotional violence of a broken home, Cusk asks a more uncomfortable question for a modern audience: what does it mean to be a mother trapped in a system that values her only as a wife? She refuses the “sentimental and patronising view that women couldn’t possibly do something horrible,” instead arguing that the real tragedy lies in the social structures that lead to that point. medea+rachel+cusk+pdf+new

Rachel Cusk’s 2015 adaptation of Medea for the Almeida Theatre modernizes Euripides’ tragedy, transforming the myth into a suburban, psychological drama focused on divorce and the societal constraints of motherhood. Critics noted the play's shift away from violent filicide toward an ambiguous ending, often praising the dialogue's precision while debating the effectiveness of its altered conclusion. Rachel Cusk’s Medea is "new" because it refuses to let the audience look away from the moral mess. It strips away the togas, the magic, and the majestic suffering, leaving behind only the terrifying sound of a woman who has realized that she has been erased. It is this very tension—between ancient myth and modern domestic drama—that makes the text so compelling. It forces the reader to examine why they demand blood from a female protagonist and what that says about their own expectations of tragedy.

It‘s a shame that Phonegap Build is closed at the top of the corona crisis and at the top of the mobile age!

Being a PhoneGap refugees we spent a lot of time looking at alternatives. On the development side, we made the jump to Ionic Capacitor which is logical upgrade from Cordova but young enough that build flows are few and far between.

The logical choice here would have been AppFlow which looks really nice. The deal-killer for use was pricing – it was simply cost-prohibitive for our small operation. After much searching, we found a great solution in CodeMagic (formerly Nevercode) – it’s a really nice CI/CD flow with a modest learning curve. It had a magic combination of true Ionic Capacitor support, ease-of-use and a free pricing tier that is full-featured. If you’re in a crunch the upgraded plans are pay-as-you-go which is also a plus.

Amazing it has not got as much attention as it deserves…

Like everyone else, phonegap left a huge hole when it shut down. We looked at every alternative out there and eventually settled on volt.build for two reasons, 1) the company behind it has been around a long time and 2) it’s the closest we could find to building locally. It’s 100% cordova and they keep up with the latest.

“volt build not support any plugins, like sqlite, file transfer, etc”

Sorry – I just saw this comment. It’s not true at all. Here’s a list of over 1000 plugins which have been checked out for use.
